Client's requirement

Faced with growing demand for health services, Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) realised it needed to alter its model of care and provide the city of Christchurch with a new, modern, fit-for-purpose hospital facility.

This need became even more urgent when, between September 2010 and February 2011, Christchurch suffered a number of major earthquakes that caused extensive damage to the hospital. The events further exacerbated pressure on the health services, but provided an opportunity to develop something truly innovative.

Built on the existing Christchurch hospital site, the CDHB’s new acute services facility will house 12 new operating theatres and procedure rooms, an expanded intensive care unit, state-of-the-art radiology department, acute medical assessment, an expanded emergency department and a rooftop helipad.

At a value of NZ$483m, the new facility is the largest and most complex building project in the history of New Zealand’s public health service.

Throughout the project, hospital staff and the community were engaged and consulted to ensure the facilities were able to last well into the future.

Our contribution

We were engaged throughout the early feasibility and business case stages of the project, to help set it up for success. This included bedding down the scope of works and early engagement with the design team to start work on the detailed functional specifications.

We helped implement early contractor involvement, reducing risk by attracting a broader contractor base, which in turn led to a more competitive bidding process.

After the project received government approval, we formed part of the design team consortia and later as project manager through the construction phase.

Making the difference

  • 6,000 additional surgeries a year
  • 400 extra beds

The new Christchurch hospital facility aims to meet the growing need for healthcare. The facility will provide space for an additional 6,000 surgeries a year, plus ward space of 400 beds, including purpose-designed spaces for children.
